5 Top Tips for Dealing with Fly Tipping

Fly tipping is disgusting, incredibly damaging for the environment, and a complete nightmare for landowners.

Dealing with the remnants of fly tipping is time consuming and expensive, something the fly tippers themselves simply don’t care about. All they are looking for is a discreet handy place to dump their rubbish without paying disposal fees.

Many fly tippers actually charge others to remove their waste, claiming to do so responsibly only to dump it a few miles down the road.

Unfortunately, certain spots are particularly appealing to these criminals, especially those places close enough to the road for a small van to access but far enough away from civilisation to avoid being spotted.

If you have been a victim of fly tipping in the past, or someone in your local area has, it is vital you take action to prevent a similar situation occurring on your land in the near future.

At Select Solutions we offer a rapid response fly tipping removal service to those unlucky enough to have garbage dumped on their land. We also specialise in helping fly tipping victims secure their land against future attacks, with no site too large or too remote for us to handle.

Here are our top 5 tips for dealing with fly tipping

Identify hotspots

If you own a large area of land, a farm for example, securing the entire site with measures such as CCTV may be impossible.

In reality though, only a small part of your land is probably attractive to fly tippers. Most fly tipping is done using small vans so identifying places where such vehicles could get close enough to easily dump rubbish and focussing your security efforts there will make the challenge a whole lot less daunting.

Secure access points

Ensure all the gates to your property are securely locked and robust fences are installed and maintained along your perimeter. Some landowners choose to install concrete blocks or bollards in gaps that they do not use to prevent unauthorised vehicles gaining access.

Install Security Lighting

Most fly tipping is done at night to minimise the risk of detection or identification. Once you have identified your high risk areas, ensure that the area is well lit and that anyone active nearby will be clearly illuminated and visible from the nearby road.

To save money, avoid angry neighbours, and to give those approaching a shock that will have them fleeing in no time, install motion detection lighting if having floodlights permanently illuminated is not viable.

Install Signs

Fly tippers do not tend to be hardened career criminals. Midless, selfish, and greedy? Absolutely. Willing to pursue their criminal activities at all costs? Probably not.

The whole reason you have been targeted by fly tippers in the first place is that your property is appealing to them. This is almost always because they assume the risk of being caught is low. These people don’t tend to take risks and installing signs warning them that they are under observation and the police will be informed the moment they enter your property will soon send them on their way.

Of course, your signs need to be backed up by the security systems themselves in case a foolish fly-tipper decides to try and call your bluff but signs are an important tool in your arsenal.

Install a CCTV Tower

CCTV towers are a fantastic tool for protecting vacant sites such from the threat of fly tipping and other criminal activity.

They require no mains electricity access as they are powered by a heavy duty battery contained within a robust armoured casing and recharged using build in solar panels. This means they can be installed absolutely anywhere and provide the exact same high level of security on farmland in the countryside as they do on construction sites in the middle of the city.

Fly tippers fear two things; being caught in the act and being identified by the police. If they see CCTV cameras anywhere in an area they simply won’t go near and will swiftly move on elsewhere.

Standing up to 7m tall in many instances and topped with cameras that provide 360 degree coverage of a wide area of land, CCTV towers are pretty hard to miss and are one of the most effective deterrents currently on the market.
